CD 2:
1. God Only Knows
Nelson—Lead Vocals
Produced by Robbie Rist
Engineered by Robbie Rist and Missy Buettner
Recorded at The Boathouse, Northridge CA

On our 2005 Spanish tour, Nelson thought it would be fun if we played a Brian Wilson/Beach Boys cover, as a nod to his “other” gig: percussionist/vocalist with Brian Wilson (for those of you who don’t know, Nelson has been in Brian’s band for several years and played on the recent SMILE album). Our “power pop” version went over so well in Spain that when we got back, we decided to record it. This is basically live in the studio, exactly the way we played it in Spain. A big Beach Boys fan we know said it sounded (amazingly enough) “like The Beatles covering the Beach Boys.” High praise, indeed. I’m just glad we didn’t embarrass ourselves!

2. Something New/Mola, Guay, OK
Produced by Robbie Rist
Engineered by Robbie Rist and Missy Buettner
Recorded at The Boathouse, Northridge CA

These are Robbie’s remixes of the original album mixes. Note the trademark Rist “dry” sound! I think “Mola Guay Ok” especially rocks a bit harder with the guitars up in the mix and minus the layers of reverb that are on the original.

3. Straight in the Eyes
Tony—vocals, bass
Seth—lead guitar, vocals
Bob Morehead—drums
Produced and Recorded by Bob Smith
Recorded at Earworks Audio, Virginia Beach, VA

We recorded this version in 1990 for a compilation called Handprints (good luck finding a copy) of Norfolk/Virginia Beach bands who had recorded at Bob Smith’s studio Earworks. This version features our original drummer Bob Morehead. We were a trio in those days, and I played “lead” guitar. We always wanted to redo this song and finally got around to it for “Electric Campfire”. . There’s a video out there somewhere of this version too. Maybe I’ll put it up on the site sometime.

4. Willoughby Station/Doin' Time
Tony—everything

Tony’s original demo of these two songs. As you can hear, these were pretty fully formed before we started recording them. We just changed some of the arrangement and a few lyrics.

5. Mola, Guay, Ok
Seth—vocals, guitars

Seth’s original demo of the song. If you can call one take, two acoustic guitars and vocals a demo! A Spanish friend and I were chatting online one night when I mentioned that because my Spanish was so mediocre, it sometimes made it difficult to chat with fans from Spain. Occasionally, rather than constantly grab my Spanish-English dictionary, I would just say “mola” or “guay” (two Spanish words for cool) in response when I was completely lost. She suggested that would make a great idea for a song. I wrote and recorded this the next day.

6. Stuck in New York
Tony—everything

Tony’s original demo.

7. Something New
Seth—vocals, guitar
Tony—bass
Robbie—lead guitar, drums, vocals
Produced by Robbie Rist

We recorded this demo version before Nelson was in the band, so Robbie played drums. It was recorded when Robbie’s studio was still in the basement of the great power pop band Sparklejets UK Mike Simmon’s house.

8. Little Girl Blue
Tony—everything

Tony’s original demo.

9. A Girl I've Never Met
Seth—everything

This was originally written in 4/4 time, as you can hear by the demo. It was Nelson’s idea to put it into a waltz-time, giving the song a ‘70’s era Saturday Night Live vibe (I can’t explain what that means, you just know it when you hear it). Listening back to the finished song in the studio, Nelson couldn’t help but do a “Don Pardo” voiceover every time the intro started. I wish we had recorded it!

10. Highway Star
Robbie—lead vocals
Produced and Recorded by David Myhr
Recorded at Moby Dick, Madrid, Spain
Mixed by Robbie Rist

Yeah, that Highway Star. This was recorded in at the club Moby Dick, in Madrid, during our 2003 Spanish tour. Our good friend David Myhr (best known for his work in the great pop band The Merrymakers) recorded several shows for us on this tour, using his mobile recording unit. We wanted to release those recordings as a live album. Robbie wanted to call the album LIVE AT THE DICK (of course). Unfortunately, we were all extremely sick by the time we started recording, so the vocals were, ahem, a bit rough. Robbie, on the other hand, could blast through ANYTHING unscathed, so his lead vocals on our version of the Deep Purple tune SHRED! The video of this recording is included on the cd, and you can also download it here on our website. It must be seen to get the full effect.

11. Dejame (english version)
Seth—lead vocals, guitar
Tony—bass, vocals
Robbie—lead guitar, drums, marimba, vocals
Produced and Recorded by Mitch Easter
Recorded at The Fidelitorium, Kernersville, NC

This was recorded before Nelson was in the band, in between the sessions for HOLLAND TUNNEL, and ELECTRIC CAMPFIRE. So, this is a Robbie tour-de-force, as he plays drums, lead guitars, and the marimbas in the solo! This track was added as a bonus to the Spanish version of HOLLAND TUNNEL only. It’s an English language version of the Spanish classic pop hit by Los Secretos. Unbelievably, it was the theme song to the Spanish hit film, LA FIESTA. And out of nowhere, the song became a top 40 radio hit in Spain.

12. Hang On
Seth—lead vocals, guitar
Tony—bass, vocals
Robbie—lead guitar, drums, vocals
Produced and Recorded by Mitch Easter
Recorded at The Fidelitorium, Kernersville, NC

Recorded at the same session as Dejame, this was for the Teenage Fanclub tribute album, WHAT A CONCEPT, released by Not Lame, and unavailable anywhere else.

13. Dejame (english version)
Seth—guitar
Tony—bass, vocals
Robbie—lead guitar, drums, marimba, vocals
Produced and Recorded by Mitch Easter
Recorded at The Fidelitorium, Kernersville, NC

This is a “karaoke” mix of the song. We thought that if we did any “live” tv in Spain, we might need a backing track mix. This mix actually includes everything except the lead vocals. Robbie’s backing vocals are now much louder in the mix. Note to my Spanish fans and friends: I am hereby acquitted of mispronouncing my “jotas” (the j sound in Dee--Jaaa—Meee)!!!! As you can now clearly hear, it’s Robbie’s Deee—HAAAAA—Meeeee, not mine! Mola, guay, ok?!!?

Seth Gordon-vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards
Dean Howell---lead guitar, vocals
Tony Leventhal---vocals, bass
Jon Niefeld-drums, percussion, vocals

The long awaited second CD. Mitch Easter produced this one, and boy does that young man know his way around a recording studio! Great sounds, great ideas, just an all-around great guy. His patent-pending magic fingers are featured on "Yes World", with a "fuzz" bass solo worthy of Jack Bruce, and in some kinda "Durango" bass thing in "Comes As No Surprise."
"New " drummer (only 4 years in Mocker Corp.) Jon Niefeld, late of The Rembrandts and Bug, two Minneapolis pop bands you might have heard of, found time to not only be our timekeeper on this one, but he also does some amazing backing vocal arranging and singing. Dean Howell, in our humble opinion one of the best guitarists not just in the pop scene, but in any scene, plays his usual brilliant lead guitar as on our first album, but this time takes it up another notch. From the Glen Campbell-esque country pop of "Sheepwalking" to the ultra-melodic Brian May style runs in "Funk #50, Dean does it all.

Shawn Pelton (now of Saturday Night Live fame) was our drummer back then. Jan Press played lead guitar on "Martha", "Lackeys" and "Someone Like You."

Diario Pop With Jesus Ordovas, 7/19/96
Tony And Seth-Acoustic Guitars And Vocals

This is kind of an odds and sods collection of extra tracks and alternate mixes that we released on the Spanish label SNAP to promote our tour of Spain in 1997. This is the Brad Jones mix of "C'mon Over To My Side." "Outdoor Café" is a different mix from our first album, mostly noticeable on the "Leslie" effect on the guitars. "Speedboat" is a great surf instro that Tony wrote for his first band, the Surf Piranhas and "Have Love" is our take on the Richard Berry classic, filtered through the Sonics, of course. The last track is an acoustic version of "5 Minutes Before" we recorded live for Spanish National Radio on Jesus Ordovas' (the Spanish John Peel!) show Diario Pop.

"Pearly Gates" with Brad Jones. This is the original mix, and also features a few different vocals, guitars and keyboards

We met Maki Kobayashi, the Queen of Pop, as well as the head of the great label Lazy Cat, at Poptopia back in 1997. We were excited to find out that she not only bought our record in Japan, but also actually liked it! After she started Lazy Cat, we were more than happy to contribute this alternate "psychedelic" mix of "I'd Give Anything" from our first album. This mix has weirder effects, and has a longer fade.

This rare Spanish compilation was put together by Colman Gota, bass player of the Spanish pop band Insanity Wave, to promote his family's Irish pub in Madrid. O'Connors is famous for the acoustic shows of touring pop bands like The Posies. We've played there many times, and Seth did a solo show there in 1999. This mix of "Selective Memory" is appropriately missing the string section featured on the album version.

This impossible to find CD was the first comp we were on, way way back in 1990. It was put out by local (Norfolk, VA) nice guy and studio owner Bob Smith. We recorded "Straight in The Eyes" at Bob's studio Earworks, and in those days we were, ahem, a power trio, with Bob Morehead on drums, and Seth (!) on lead guitar. We also did a low budget video for this song.
We brought it back into the fold after 7 years, featuring it in our live sets on our '97 tour of Spain.
Who knows, maybe we'll re-do it for the next album!
